Seismic Interferometry from Correlated Noise Sources

چکیده
It is a well-established principle that cross-correlating seismic observations at different receiver locations can yield estimates of band-limited inter-receiver Green’s functions. This principle, known as function retrieval or interferometry, powerful technique transform noise into signals which enable remote interrogation and imaging the Earth’s subsurface. In practice it often necessary even desirable to rely on already present in environment. Theory underpins many applications ambient interferometry assumes sources are uncorrelated time. However, real-world such trains, highway traffic ocean waves inherently correlated space time, direct contradiction these theoretical foundations. Applying standard interferometric techniques recordings from energy makes liable estimation errors so far have not been fully accounted for theoretically nor practice. We show significant common sources, always perturbing entirely obscuring phase one wishes retrieve. Our analysis explains why stacking may reduce errors, but also shows commonly encountered circumstances will remediate problem. analytical insight allowed us develop novel workflow significantly mitigates effects arising use sources. methodology be used conjunction with existing approaches, improves results both noise. Hence, we expect widely applicable studies.

Distribution of noise sources for seismic interferometry
S U M M A R Y We demonstrate that the distribution of seismic noise sources affects the accuracy of Green’s function estimates and therefore isotropic and anisotropic tomographic inversions for both velocity and attenuation. We compare three methods for estimating seismic noise source distributions and quantify the potential error in phase velocity, azimuthal anisotropy and attenuation estimate...
متن کاملEvent-driven Seismic Interferometry with Ambient Seismic Noise
SUMMARY By cross-correlating recordings of ambient seismic noise, one can retrieve the subsurface reflection response. The quality of the retrieved reflections would depend on the qualities of the ambient noise. In a previous study, we cross-correlated ambient-noise data recorded in a desert area in North Africa and showed that we retrieved reflections. This was done assuming that body-wave noi...
متن کاملOcean wave sources of seismic noise
[1] Noise with periods 3 to 10 s, ubiquitous in seismic records, is expected to be mostly generated by pairs of ocean wave trains of opposing propagation directions with half the seismic frequency. Here we present the first comprehensive numerical model of microseismic generation by random ocean waves, including ocean wave reflections. Synthetic and observed seismic spectra are well correlated ...
متن کاملAcoustic correlated sources direction finding in the presence of unknown spatial correlation noise
In this paper, a new method is proposed for DOA estimation of correlated acoustic signals, in the presence of unknown spatial correlation noise. By generating a matrix from the signal subspace with the Hankel-SVD method, the correlated resource information is extracted from each eigen-vector. Then a joint-diagonalization structure is constructed of the signal subspace and basis it, independent...
متن کاملImproved Green’s functions from seismic interferometry
Under certain theoretical assumptions, the theory of seismic interferometry allows the construction of artificial (or virtual) sources and receivers at the locations of receivers in a physical experiment. This is done by redatuming the physical sources to be at the locations of the physical receivers. Each redatumed trace is formed by stacking the cross-correlations of appropriate recorded trac...
